Eva Kilgore: Buon Gusto is re-modeled, re-opened and as good as ever after kitchen fire

I had an excellent meal at the newly reopened Buon Gusto.

This excellent Italian restaurant was closed for two years after a kitchen fire. The inside is remodeled, with an extra two rooms. Food? As always, plentiful and delicious.

I visited with 13 friends, and we sat in one of the new rooms decorated with a distinctive Italian decor. I started with the House Salad, loaded with marinated vegetables, and a tangy dressing — only $5.95 and very large. I took half of it home.

For the main course, I had the Eggplant alla Parmigiana for $12.95. It was melt-in-your-mouth good and so big I asked for a take home box for that too.

We had a few glasses of wine, and a super time. Definitely worth a visit or two, or three. It’s only open for dinner now, but soon they’ll be serving lunch, too.

Buon Gusto is in Huntington Beach at 4911 Warner Ave. near Bolsa Chica Street. Hours: 5 to 10 p.m. daily. Information: buongustohb.com or 714-846-2600.

X Cell Repair

Rolling my eyes as I write this …

Who leaves their cellphone on the hood of a car, then goes merrily down the road? Raising hand.

When I found out my iPhone was not in the car, it was time to retrace my steps. There it was on a main street, face down with the screen cracked. I needed help.

A friend recommended X Cell Repair. The tech at this small store assured me the screen would be replaced within a half hour. Sure enough, when I returned 30 minutes later, the phone was as good as new.

X Cell Repair also takes care of repairs for computers, iPads and iPods … they’ve been here for nine years.

It’s at 6858 Edinger Ave. near Goldenwest Street. Information: xcellrepairs.com or 714-907-0100.

Duck Donuts

I’ve been waiting for Duck Donuts to open in Huntington Beach. Of course, it’s usually about the donuts, but here it’s also about the icing. Maple icing with chopped bacon, lemon icing with coconut, and orange icing with vanilla drizzle. I want to try them all.

The ribbon-cutting is set for Wednesday, July 11 from noon to 1 p.m. It’s located at 18591 Main St. near Beach Boulevard. Information: duckdonuts.com or 714-960-7654.

Angel Food Donuts

And while we’re talking about donuts … what to do when you’ve signed up to bring donuts to a meeting and don’t have much time to get them? I headed to the drive-through at Angel Food Donuts.

There was one car in front of me. Within two minutes I ordered a box filled with glazed, sprinkles, a few old-fashioned, and chocolate cake donuts. Before I knew it I was on the way.

I ordered an extra donut to munch on in the car … don’t judge.

Angel Food Donuts is in Fountain Valley at 16958 Bushard St. near Warner Avenue. Hours: 5 a.m. to midnight Monday through Friday; 6 a.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday. Information: 714-962-5455.
