Took my daughter to the newly opened Jimboy’s Tacos for a late lunch recently and ordered The Jimboy Special — two ground beef tacos and a regular soft drink, for $7. Paige got the Jimboy Bowl with lettuce, pinto beans, red rice, pico (made fresh daily in small batches on location), and sour cream for $7. Service was fast, and extra friendly.
The crispy, perfectly cooked taco shell is dusted with Parmesan cheese.
The ground beef, cheese and lettuce made me very happy. But I also had to taste the bowl … an excellent combo of flavors. Next time Ill try the smoked brisket quesadilla, and the taquito burrito. What? Yes, it’s a taquito stuffed inside a burrito.
We sat by the window, overlooking the ocean. Excellent food, breeze and people watching.
“We are having the best meal,” said diner Linda Gallagher, a Huntington Beach local. “The pico is very flavorful, the guacamole is delicious, and these tacos are so tasty.”
Jimboy’s Tacos is in Huntington Beach at 120 Fifth St., Suite C-100 near Pacific Coast Highway. Hours: 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. Information: jimboystacos.com or 916-934-5100.
Da Hawaiian Kitchen
My favorite place to vacation is Hawaii. I won’t be visiting this idyllic getaway for awhile, but for an upcoming family gathering we’ll be invoking the aloha spirit … from decorations to food.
I am in charge of bringing some island-inspired eats. They’ll be coming from Da Hawaiian Kitchen in Huntington Beach, a small spot that turns out big flavors: teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, potato mac salad, and Spam musubi (that’s Spam and rice drizzled with oyster teriyaki and wrapped in nori).
There’s a good possibility I may order a bit of poke while I’m picking up this big spread. You never know.
Da Hawaiian Kitchen is at 9842 Adams Ave. near Brookhurst Street. Hours: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m.- 9 p.m. Friday; 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. Sunday. Information: dahawaiiankitchen.com or 714-968-8900.
Piccola Stivale Italian Ristorante
Abraham Espinosa, owner of Piccola Stivale Italian Ristorante in Huntington Beach, told me the new restaurant should be open by mid-July.
A bright new interior is getting the finishing touches. There’s going to be a full Italian menu, plus beer and wine will be offered.
Piccola Stivale Italian Ristorante is taking over the space that was Sushi on Top at 19171 Magnolia St. near Garfield Avenue.
Christmas in July
It may be tank top and pool weather, but you are sure to be full of cheer at the Christmas in July Multi Chamber Mixer hosted by Elwyn California from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18. The event is free to attend.
You’re encouraged to wear Christmas bells, and enjoy some light refreshments. Elwyn California is in Fountain Valley at 18325 Mt. Baldy Circle near Ellis Avenue. Information: 714-962-3922.
Store closed
Children’s Orchard has shut its doors. There is a For Lease sign on the front window, and the phone is disconnected. I’ve visited this Fountain Valley store for many years. Always super bargains on children’s clothing, accessories and toys.
Children’s Orchard was at 18645 Brookhurst St.
