A 2010 Newport Harbor High School graduate serving in the U.S. Navy participated this summer in the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise known as the Rim of the Pacific.

Newport Beach native Petty Officer 3rd Class Dillan Freiberg is an operations specialist aboard USS Lake Champlain.

The theme of the 2018 exercise was “Capable, Adaptive, Partners.” The training program includes amphibious operations, gunnery, missile, anti-submarine and air defense exercises, as well as counter-piracy, mine clearance operations, explosive ordnance disposal and diving and salvage operations.

Volunteers honored for giving cancer patients a lift

The American Cancer Society recently recognized Lynn Duncan of Fountain Valley and  Stephanie Deagle of Huntington Beach for their work with the organization.

Duncan and Deagle help out in the society’s Road to Recovery program, where volunteer drivers take cancer patients to treatment and home again.

Duncan received an award for driving cancer patients on 2,300 rides to treatment over the last nine years. Deagle received an award for driving cancer patients on more than 500 rides to treatment over the last eight years.

The Newport Beach City Arts Commission selected earlier this summer the best images in the 2018 Sculpture Photo contest.

Commissioners looked at more than 200 entries showing one or more of the sculptures on display in the Sculpture in Civic Center Park Exhibition. The winners in the three categories were:

Jack & Jill Guild honors 50-year member

Tustin resident Barbara Sayers received a special plaque earlier this summer for her 50 years of service with CHOC Children’s Jack & Jill Guild.

Throughout the years, Sayers held many positions in the guild, including president, treasurer and home tour chair.

The former teacher came up with the successful Jack & Jill Guild Home Tour and Boutique. The annual fundraising event has people walking through decorated homes and members selling homemade items.

Sayers said making good friends and activities that included husbands are among her most memorable guild moments.

The Jack & Jill Guild has raised nearly 6 million dollars in the organization’s 57-year history.

New Eagle Scouts

Paul “PJ” Teng and Herbert “Kaz” Teng recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank.

The 17-year-old twins, who graduated from Foothill High School, are members of Troop 235 of Tustin, sponsored by Redhill Lutheran Church. For their Eagle Scout project, they coordinated the construction of multiple canoe stands and a heavy-duty canoe rack for Newport Outrigger Canoe Club, a nonprofit organization and the oldest Hawaiian outrigger canoe club in California.
