Foothill baseball team donates pies for a good cause

Foothill High School baseball players made Thanksgiving a little sweeter for the Tustin police and fire departments. They also helped “Operation Warm Wishes,” led by TyRon Jackson.

For several weeks, the players sold pies for a team fundraiser, giving buyers the option to donate the sweets.

The result? Eighty pies donated to those who serve and protect, as well as those who are in need.

A wheelie big surprise

More than 100 third-graders at Robert Heideman Elementary School are cruising around on new bikes.

The gifts from San Diego-based Bikes for Kids came as a big surprise to the students.

They had all participated in an essay contest, “My Big Dream Is…” and at first two students were awarded bikes after being asked to read their pieces during the assembly. Then four more students were awarded bikes and then the sliding door to the multipurpose room was opened and all of the students were told they were receiving a bike, according to the district. They also received helmets.

Women lunch and raise money for local youth shelters

The 40 women who make up a “Chew for Charity” group recently raised $800 for Waymakers and youth shelters in Laguna Beach, Tustin and Huntington Beach.

The group has been meeting monthly since 2007 and has raised more than $80,000 for Waymakers, a nonprofit that provides counseling and support services to struggling Orange County children and families at their greatest time of need.

In addition to regular lunches, guild members also help to sell tickets for Waymakers’ fundraising events, and advocate on behalf of Waymakers throughout the Orange County community. Every contribution collected, lunch organized, detail buttoned down is volunteer-driven.
