If your schedule doesn’t allow you to attend a City Council or other official civic meeting, you have an opportunity coming up to find out just what the city’s focal points are as 2019 rolls along.

The Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual State of the City luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Los Caballeros Sports Village.

Mayor Steve Nagel will discuss the city’s priorities and recap 2018. Additionally, there will be a panel discussion featuring City Manager Rob Houston, Fire Chief Tony Coppolino and Public Works Director Mark Lewis.

Cost is $25 for Chamber members, $30 for non-members in advance; $35 at the door. Advance registration ends Thursday, Jan. 24.

For additional information, call the Chamber office at 714-962-3822, email info@fvchamber.com, or go to fvchamber.com.

Speaking of status updates, I attended the Fountain Valley Schools Foundation’s State of the Schools Breakfast last week.

About 120 civic and community leaders were invited to the breakfast to hear an inspiring presentation by Superintendent Mark Johnson, who updated us on several topics, including how the district is using money from the voter-approved passage of the Measure O school bond, the district’s latest facilities improvements and the programs that are making the Fountain Valley School District one of the highest performing elementary districts in Orange County.

The Fountain Valley Schools Foundation was founded on the belief that FVSD parents and residents can help create the schools they want for their children through financial support.

The Foundation’s focus is on the district’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs as well as art and music programs, including the district’s honor band, orchestra and marching band. The Foundation holds a couple of big fundraisers during the year – the Taste of Fountain Valley and the Marc Ecker Golf Classic, named in honor of retired FVSD Superintendent Marc Ecker.

I suggest you put the April 6 Taste of Fountain Valley food and wine festival on your calendar. This is a fun evening of food, wine and beer sampling featuring local restaurants, caterers, bakeries, breweries and wineries. It’s held on the tennis courts at the Los Caballeros Sports Village.

Funds raised go to the foundation’s efforts to provide a great educational experience for the district’s students.
