The Fountain Valley Community Foundation’s annual charity 5K fun run isn’t just about seeing how quickly you can run or walk 3.1 miles. As its name implies, the Feb. 1 run is about both fun and giving back to the community.
Why is it fun? Well, unless you’re training for the Olympics or the Boston Marathon, there is no pressure to break the sound barrier. You can run, walk, skip, or bring along your dog.
However, for the record, runners will be able to see their times as they cross the finish line.
Additionally, runners are welcome to don their favorite superhero outfit for the run. You might see Superman, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Capt. America, or Batman on the course.
And how do you give back? When you sign up online, most of your registration fee goes to the local cause you choose. That might be the Fountain Valley High baseball team, or the Kiwanis Club, or your church, or the Curt Seeden Fan Club.
For example, if 10 people from the Los Amigos High marching band sign up at $25 per person, $22 of each participant’s registration fee goes back to the marching band. And if you have kids who participate in after-school curriculum such as band, any sport, vocal music or cheerleading, you know those programs depend on fundraisers.
Officially, the event is the Nathan 5K Run/Walk. Nathan Sports is the name sponsor.
Here are the particulars: The race begins at 9 a.m. Cost is $25 for ages 13 and older; $15 for ages 6-12; and free to those under 6. There is also a 1-mile kids race for those 12 and under. The 5K is held at the Fountain Valley Sports Park, 16400 Brookhurst St.
