American soldiers gained the country’s independence all over again Saturday, Feb. 15, in Huntington Beach Central Park. And they shall return on Sunday.
The Huntington Beach Historical Society is hosting a reenactment of the American Revolution on the same battleground as the annual Civil War Days.
Saturday’s event began with artillery and sword demonstrations, followed by marching British soldiers. Then came the real excitement, with muskets blazing, as the Red Coats fought the Blue Coats in the Battle of Lexington.
Next, visitors witnessed the Founding Fathers draft the Declaration of Independence. George Washington convened a Council of War with his generals before addressing the troops.
On a more gentile note, an 18th-century dance featured the colorful costumes of the day.
Saturday closed with the 1779 Battle of Stony Point.
Sunday will see some of the same performances, along with the 1776 Battle of White Plains and the 1777 Battle of Princeton.
