Trio of authors highlight local American Association of University Women’s annual luncheon

Authors Anne Perry, Aline Ohanesian and Abbi Waxman are the featured speakers at the 26th annual Authors Luncheon of the Tri-City Branch of the American Association of University Women, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17 at Old Ranch Country Club, 3901 Lampson Ave, Seal Beach. The local branch represents Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Westminster.

Perry is a prolific writer with 55 historical mysteries featuring either Thomas Pitt or William Monk, as well as Christmas mysteries, war collections, young adult novels and short stories. She is also notorious for her conviction as a 15-year-old in 1954 in New Zealand for her part in the murder of her friend’s mother. After serving five years, she left New Zealand and changed her name.

Ohanesian is a Kuwaiti-born author of the critically acclaimed novel “Orhan’s Inheritance.” Abbi Waxman is the writer of humorous books, who began writing fiction after working in advertising.

The event features a meet-and-greet with the authors, silent auction, opportunity drawing, book sales and signing, entertainment and lunch. AAUW provides educational opportunities and legal advocacy for women and girls.

Ocean View School District salutes employees

The Ocean View School District announced its five 2018 Classified Employees of the Year across all of its campuses, including Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley. The winners were nominated by peers from more than 500 classified staff members. Winners were surprised at work with flowers, balloons and cheers.

This year’s winners are: Arthur Camarena, head custodian, Harbour View Elementary School; Laurie Gorham, lead food service worker, Spring View Middle School; Ryan Keel, office manager, Lake View Elementary; Jason Kina, speech and language assistant, Lake View and Westmont elementary; and Thomas Wroniak, bus driver, transportation department.

Josh Lowenthal is the son of long-time politicians Alan and Bonnie Lowenthal and a candidate for California’s 72nd Assembly District, which includes portions of Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Garden Grove and Westminster. And yet, in his literature, the first thing he says is “I am not a politiciain.”

Josh Lowenthal will describe his candidacy at the monthly meeting of the Democratic Club of West Orange County, at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, March 1 at 18222 Santa Joanana in Fountain Valley. Information: 310-871-2083.
