Curt Seeden: Fridays mean fish, fun and fundraising at Holy Spirit

Friday nights are “date nights” for Lynn and me during the next several weeks.

That’s because the Knights of Columbus at Holy Spirit Catholic Church will hold their Lenten fish bakes each Friday evening throughout most of March.

Make sure to put Fridays March 2, 9, 16 and 23 on your schedule.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal organization that serves the church and the community. The Knights, like many clubs and organizations in town, epitomize volunteerism. It’s what makes Fountain Valley so unique.

Anyway, Lenten dinners are served from 5 to 7 p.m. and feature something for just about everybody. The menu includes fried fish, Vietnamese charbroiled fish with vermicelli noodles, New England clam chowder, macaroni and cheese, onion rings, French fries, egg rolls, coffee and tea. Beer and wine will also be available for purchase.

The church’s Youth Group will be selling soda, water, root beer floats and ice cream.

Don’t tell my doctor, but I love this menu.

The Catholic practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays has made Lenten fish bakes popular. In fact, the addition of the Filet-o-Fish to the McDonald’s menu occurred after a franchise in Cincinnati noticed it wasn’t selling a lot of hamburgers on Fridays during Lent.

If you go, you’ll probably be entertained by various groups of musicians on the stage at the church’s Doyle Hall, which adds to the ambiance of the evening.

You are also sure to run into lots of people you know. Holy Spirit’s parish community now numbers about 4,000 families.

The cost is a mere $10 for adults and $6 for children ages 6 to 12. It’s free for kids under 6.

Holy Spirit Catholic Church is at 17270 Ward St., just south of Warner Avenue.

And speaking of food and fundraising …

This year’s Taste of Fountain Valley, a fundraiser for the Fountain Valley Schools Foundation, is set for 6 to 10 p.m. April 21 at Los Caballeros Sports Village.

The 2018 Taste of Fountain Valley will feature more than 30 restaurants, eateries, caterers, patisseries, bakeries and specialty foods from Fountain Valley and nearby cities. The evening event will feature the region’s wineries, breweries and live musical entertainment.

All proceeds go to support the Fountain Valley Schools Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed to enrich each student’s academic experience by providing cutting edge technology and resources.

Los Caballeros is at 17272 Newhope St. Childcare will be available.

More information is available by going to the Taste of Fountain Valley Facebook page or by calling 714-625-7198.
