After a two-week soft opening, 85º Bakery Café officially opened Friday, March 30 in Orange.

The popular Taiwanese chain‘s signature coffee, the sea-salt ice coffee, will be sold for 10 cents all day through midnight. The deal applies to the medium drink, which typically sells for $3.50.

The crowd grew Friday as customers browsed the bakery aisle, which was stuffed with freshly made bread and pastries. Items ranged from sweet rolls to savory breakfast breads stuffed with cheese and sausage. Prices for bakery items — calamari stick (a squid-ink blackened bun) or a matcha red bean roll, sausage danish, chocolate cookie bread — range from $1.85 to $3.50.

The kitchen bustled with cooks and area managers who descended on the store to help with its launch. A ceremonial ribbon cutting was held with giant gold scissors.

The chain has grown rapidly in California, Texas and Washington state. At least 11 stores debuted across Southern California in the last 12 months, bringing the region’s total to 30. The company, owned by Gourmet Master Co. in Taiwan, says it has 1,000 units worldwide and 47 in the U.S.

The coffee shop is named for the company’s preferred temperature at which to brew coffee (85 degrees Celsius). The chain only serves espresso-based coffees (hot and cold). The drink selection also includes a variety of teas and smoothies.

The concept has gained a large California following. It’s not uncommon to see a line out the door on weekends as customers wait to buy European- and Japanese-influenced pastries and the quirky sea-salt iced coffee. The trendy coffee is topped with a salted whipped cream. The cup is sealed with a slick plastic sheath, and customers are encouraged to shake the mixture before drinking.

The expansion is ongoing across Southern California. 85º Bakery is in the middle of a soft opening at a new store in Fountain Valley. The official grand opening is Friday, April 6. Address: 18637 Brookhurst St. New bakeries also are coming to Irvine Spectrum Center by mid-year and Century City mall in Los Angeles (10250 Santa Monica Blvd.).

The Orange store is in the shopping center with In-N-Out and Stater Bros. in a former Golden Spoons location. Address: 3533 E Chapman Ave., Suite A.
